Regina E. Herzlinger

Regina E. HerzlingerRegina E. Herzlinger, Ph.D. is the Nancy R. McPherson Professor of Business Administration Chair at the Harvard Business School. She was the first woman to be tenured and chaired at Harvard Business School and the first to serve on a number of corporate boards. She has written many articles and books in the fields of governance, health care, and nonprofit organizations. She is currently researching the transformation of the American health care industry and oversight issues.

Her research has been profiled in numerous industry journals and business publications, such as The Economist and Fortune, and has been recognized for excellence by the American College of Healthcare Executives and the management accounting profession. She has twice won the Thompson Book of the Year Award. She was profiled by the Wall Street Journal (November, 2002) and by Managed Care Executive (June, 2003) for her latest book, Consumer-Driven Health Care. Her article, "Let's Put Consumers in Charge of Health Care," Harvard Business Review, is an Amazon ebooks best seller. She has delivered many keynote addresses to annual meetings of large health care groups. In recognition of her work in nonprofit accounting and control, she was named the first CIMA Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh. She was elected as one of health care's "100 Most Powerful People" by Modern Healthcare and Managed Healthcare has named her as one of health care's top ten thinkers. She also has been elected by her students as one of the outstanding instructors of the Harvard Business School MBA Class.

Mrs. Herzlinger now serves on the Scientific Advisory Group to the U.S. Secretary of the Air Force. She has been a board member of 12 publicly-traded firms and has served as the chair of many board subcommittees-including Governance, Audit, and Pensions. She has been a member of the Executive Governance Committees of all her Boards. She chaired the CEO Succession Committee of Total Renal Care (now DaVita). Its stock moved from $4 to $25 after the CEO the committee selected took office.

Regina Herzlinger received her Bachelor's Degree from MIT and her Doctorate from the Harvard Business School.

Both of Mrs. Herzlinger's children attended Harvard College. Her daughter is a resident at a Boston hospital; her son is a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. She has been married to Dr. George Herzlinger, her MIT classmate, for 37 years.
