Mr. Chairman and members of the Subcommittee, I am Pamela Villarreal, a senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis. Disability versus Work

Entitlement reforms usually focus on changes in Social Security retirement benefits and Medicare. However, the disability component of Social Security is growing faster than retirement benefits and requires substantive reforms. Over the past three years, the number of Americans receiving disability benefits increased by more than 1 million, bringing the total number to 10.8 million. What is behind this surge?

How Much Does the Federal Government Owe?

The U.S. government faces severe fiscal challenges due to trillion dollar annual budget deficits and mounting public debt. But the liabilities are much larger than the public debt, due to commitments the government has made to federal employees, to veterans and to seniors. In addition, it has made explicit and implicit commitments to current workers and retirees through the Social Security and Medicare programs.
