February 1, 1999 — While America was founded on the principle of freedom, it is a foreign concept in many other nations. That's just one of the issues to be discussed by the world's leading line-up of free-market scholars who will assemble in Dallas February 5 and 6 to share stories and strategies on how to affect change.
The panel is part of a workshop sponsored by the Atlas Economic Research Foundation and the National Center for Policy Analysis' 15th Anniversary celebration.
Participants in the conference will hear from "heroes of the free-market movement" who have spearheaded public policy changes in their homelands. The panel will be moderated by Alejandro Chafuen, President of the Virginia-based Atlas Foundation and will include:
Manuel Ayua of the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala, who has traveled the world explaining the virtues of free market economics.
Enrique Ghersi of the CITEL in Peru, a former member of Parliament who co-authored the pioneering book "The Other Path," which describes the necessity of private property to healthy economic development.
Parth Shah, founder of the groundbreaking Centre for a Civil Society in India.
Atilla Yayla, founder of the Association for Liberal Thinking in Turkey and the first person to bring free-market ideals to his country.
The panel discussion will take place from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m., February 5, in the Monte Carlo Theater at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel. Other panels at the conference will address how to improve social welfare programs, how to reform education, and ways to market pro-free enterprise ideas. A gala dinner on February 6 will feature Dr. Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize winner for excellence in economics in 1976, who Fortune magazine recently named "Economist of the Century."
