As recently as last week, the GOP was being ripped – by Newt Gingrich, no less – for criticizing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act without offering alternatives. “We need to get away from this, ‘I’m against ObamaCare,’ and then stop – and that’s all you have to say,” the former speaker of the House told a gathering of GOP operatives in Boston.
But Hadley Heath of the Independent Women’s Forum says solutions have been proposed by people on the right, including a proposal at the National Center for Policy Analysis by John Goodman and Peter Ferrara, as well as by Jim Capretta at the Ethics and Public Policy Center.
“These are sort of some of the ‘wonkish’ proposals in the policy world, but we also have specific pieces of legislation that have been put together by [Congressman] Tom Price,” Heath says, referring to the Georgia Republican. “He put forward a bill called the Empowering Patients First Act [H.R. 2300] three times in the House of Representatives. There’s also a bill that’s being put together by the Republican Study Committee.”
Heath recommends that those who doubt her should enter “Republican Health Care Reform” or “Conservative Health Care Reform” on any search engine.
“I think it’s a very dishonest campaign – usually by ObamaCare supporters – to say that there are no alternative ideas,” she offers, “[to say] that there’s no way to use private market forces to have a consumer- and patient-driven healthcare system and instead they turn to these government-centric reforms like ObamaCare.”
