Focus Point – Canadians Get it Right

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis.

Since I've remarked more than once about the awful straits the Canadian Socialized Health Care System has found itself in, I feel I ought to report a bit of good news.

According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, the Canadian system, which forces rationed care, is going to try Privatization. Alberta has introduced legislation to license private hospitals, which had virtually disappeared. There's a bill in the House of Commons to legalize for profit medicine. Polls show 74 percent of people support allowing doctors to charge patients more for services if they can afford the costs. And why not? Delays in treatment because of rationing have forced some hospitals to present patients with written warnings advising them delays could be dangerous to their health, and suggesting they go to the U.S. for help. Since last April, about 700 cancer patients from Ontario alone have headed South. Maybe now, the Canadian government is doing something to keep them at home.

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can save the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, Medicaid waste.
