Focus Point – Congressional Hypocrites

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis — with a report of hypocrisy in action.

In Congress, School Choice Legislation is stuck. But guess where lots of legislators send their children? The Washington, D.C. public schools? Of course, they send their kids to private schools, while denying poor children the same right to escape that awful DC school system.

The Heritage Foundation reports 49 percent of Senators and 40 percent of house members sent at least one child to private school.

Yet despite national support for choice by Blacks and Hispanics, members of the Black Caucus and the Hispanic Caucus continue to oppose it — even as 29 percent of the Black Caucus and 14 percent of the Hispanic Caucus send their kids to private schools.

Yet Dick Armey's bill that would have given choice to children in dangerous schools and Thomas Petri's to allow states to use federal education funds for poor students in choice programs, both failed. Both would have passed if the hypocrites who seized choice for their own children had granted it to the children of others.

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, why gas is expensive.
