I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. John McCain is back in the fight, pushing what he calls campaign finance reform and what I call limiting free speech. So before he puts an end to the First Amendment, let me offer a modest proposal.
Let's just amend Article One of the Constitution and instead of electing representatives and senators, we'll choose them by lot.
This would solve all the problems reformers bewail. No need to raise money.
No need to cater to special interests. No tedium of campaigns. No campaign favors, either. It worked in greece 2500 years ago.
Maybe lottery democracy is the megareform America longs for. Every two years, new representatives. Every six years, new senators. Liberals will love it, no more special interests, or big compaign donors.
On the other hand, the middle class will control congress – so look for tax cuts, and missile defense, and social security privatization, and an end to farm subsidies.
What's that? You like voting for people who think like you do? And contributing to them? What kind of neanderthal are you?
