The electoral college endorsement of George W. Bush should have been an afterthought, but sore losers wouldn't let it be. Al Gore had already conceded, but democratic operatives were still at work.
A web site was set up by the spectacularly misnamed "Citizens for True Democracy" listing the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the republican electors, and urging people to harrass them hoping to get just three to flip.
One democratic activist was reported gathering background information on republican electors, presumably for blackmail purposes.
Nation Magazine's cover editorial read "Wanted: Three Republican Electors…." arguing that since Al Gore won the popular vote, he should be president, never mind that messy, out-of-date constitution.
But as one Florida elector said, "Look we signed a pledge. What do they expect us to do?"
An elector who changes his vote is called, aptly, a "faithless elector." there weren't any. But those who tried their faith ought to be ashamed.
