I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Well, Elian Gonzalez has attended his first democratic fundraiser. I thought after the Reno's raiders conclusion to the Elian Gonzalez standoff there wouldn't be any further way for the government to embarrass itself. But I guess I should no better.
Elian and his father were trotted out for a bunch of liberal Washington Democratic bigwigs. The scene was a dinner given by Smith and Elizabeth Bagley, long-time Democratic Party funders and, as one critic put it, the pro-Castro lobby's sugar daddy, willing to fund anybody with an ideological axe to grind against U.S. policy on Cuba.
When Elian goes home to Cuba, he'll be nothing more than a propaganda exhibit. And that's all he was at this party — that, and, despite strenuous denials, a fundraising tool. "Not one dollar changed hands" they said. Well, no, I'm sure it didn't — at the time. It was as pure as a Buddhist temple.
