Focus Point – George W. 1

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Memo to George W. Bush. Ok, finally, barring a last Gore kamikaze attack, congratulations. Now, to business.

Your main goal: Get as much as you can of the program you campaigned on through Congress. While you're putting that together, have your counsel go through the flood of Clinton executive orders that will be going out until the morning of January 20, and see which ones you can undo.

Next, as you structure your cabinet, pick people who'll carry out your policy, not represent an interest group. Next, forget about a cabinet that "looks like America." Get one that thinks like America. People who think like Ralph Nader and Jesse Jackson are a distinct minority. And forget about a bi-partisan cabinet; policy is all that counts.

Finally, and most important, it doesn't matter how you got here. The point is, you did. Don't let timid people stop you from acting boldly and forcefully. The next four years are an empty page. Fill them up the best you can.

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, more free advice.
