I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. You can bet there will be agitation to get rid of the electoral college because Al Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush won the presidency.
I know it may sound hard-hearted to say "so what?" but so what?
The senate was designed to give equal representation to each state, large and small, and the electoral college was created to give each state a vote in choosing the president.
It does so by making sure that a candidate campaigns across the country, rather than concentrating on a few populous states. Did you see those red and blue county breakdowns of presidential voting, with Gore blue around the edges and Bush red in the rest of the country? That's why Bush won – his message sold in the flyover.
But ditch the college, and Oklahoma, North Dakota, Arizona and Idaho will never see a candidate – and no candidate will have to listen to what they want. Keep the college. It's worked just fine for 20 years
