I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. If George W. Bush is looking for an easy target, how about Clinton–Gore energy policies, like their opposition to oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge because it threatens land and wildlife.
Environmentalists made the same argument 20 years ago about the trans-Alaska pipeline.
There, they built a tunnel under a causeway from the land to the drilling platform because environmentalists said fish were too stupid to swim around it. They swan around it.
Since lights would scare fish, two tunnels, one dark and one lighted were built. The fish used both. Yet to this day, a biologist permanently monitors the situation.
Environmentalists said caribou were too stupid to walk under the pipeline, so we built expensive bridges. Caribou walk under the pipeline, and use the bridges for shade during the summer.
Now the same people are against exploring Alaska's coastal plain and its 4 billion barrels of oil. And we've never built the pipeline to bring cheap, abundant Canadian natural gas to the northeast.
Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, the uninsured.
