I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Needless to say, I'm for George W. Bush's tax cut plan. And I know why he's going to have tough time selling it. It's because liberals can't see beyond the end of their noses.
Liberals see a tax cut as a giveaway to the rich, period. End of story.
Conservatives know people's behavior is changed by tax cuts, which invariably yield more revenues.
Take Virginia, which has a tax on cars that governor Jim Gilmore pledged to end when he was elected in 1997. It'll be 70 percent lower this year, and gone next year.
People, naturally, bought more — cars! And how do liberals respond? By complaining the revenue from the tax phase out on the additional cars has been lost.
And that's how Washington liberals analyze tax cuts. The tax is cut, leading to increased work and investment. Liberals then assume that the previous rates of tax could have been collected at the higher level of activity. Thus They think lowering tax rates deprives the government of vast revenues.
In a word, clueless in Washington.
