I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. From the "The Era of Big Government Isn't Over" file…
Senator John McCain recently showed what a mess the defense budget is….or rather, he showed what a mess pork barrel politicians make of it.
The Federal Government will spend about $1.8 trillion in the current fiscal year. Two-thirds will be spent on entitlements, which congress doesn't control. It does control the rest, and McCain found $7.9 billion worth of spending in defense expenditures that are, well, curious.
Like $8.5 million to the Gallo center to study the effects of alcohol on the brain. Hey, I can save them the money. A little bit's nice. Too much makes you drunk. For this they need our money?
The Trinity Repertory Company of Providence, Rhode Island, gets $900,000 to convert an abandoned building for their use. There's money for farmland in Washington, and road work in Maryland, all from the defense budget.
Which is why the era of big government isn't over, and won't be until you force them to stop.
Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, Al Gore on drugs.
