Focus Point – Some Thoughts on the Ending

Hi I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis.

Tomorrow is going to be a special day, but today let me say a word about these commentaries.

Over the seven years they have been on the air, they have covered all kinds of topics – taxes, social security, schools, military and foreign policy, book reviews, the UN, and the USA, people, personalities, serious and silly public policy ideas.

Their theme has been simple too: individualism and markets work. The government has a constitutional role of course – it prints the money, defends the nation and enforces the Bill of Rights. It also sets the rules and referees the game. But when government becomes a player while it is also the ref, it usually doesn't work out. Better to set the rules and let individuals use their talents through the medium of the market.

Someone asked me once what I was trying to do on the air. Well, I replied, to speak in english to people who go bowling, and to paint my ideas in such bold primary colors that listeners can understand why they are important.

So there you have it – my thoughts on 7 years on the air. I'm Pete du Pont, next time – farewell.
