I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Congressman Sam Farr, the California democrat, says that "taking money out of politics" is the goal of his party. That may sound good as a quick campaign slogan, but its not only unconstitutional, its also a really bad idea.
If congress tried to limit what dan rather or the New York Times could say about candidates during elections, the media and most of the American people would be outraged.
Yet that's precisely what the McCain led campaign finance reform bill now being debated in the house, tries to do to individuals. And it's just as outrageous and unconstitutional.
Limiting money is also a bad idea, because it would leave politics in the hands of celebrities like Barbara Streisand, and well known businessmen like Ted Turner.
Why? Because the average joe has no name recognition, and therefore has to raise a lot of money just to be hears.
Maybe that's why so many in congress are willing to jump on the McCain reform bandwagon – it actually helps them win re-election!
Seems the incumbants are trying to rig – I mean reform- the system.
