I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Big-spending liberals got their clocks cleaned by the Reagan tax cuts 20 years ago and never got over it.
Liberals think tax cuts mean less revenue which means they couldn't spend more. That's why they oppose the Bush tax cuts — as modest and scaled-back as they are. The Bush plan, which West Virginia democrat Robert Byrd derides as "sheer madness," cuts taxes,increases spending four percent and still leaves a trillion dollars of the surplus to spend elsewhere on some madness.
But it doesn't matter if the surplus is $5.6 trillion or $56 trillion. Liberals would still shriek about "irresponsible" tax cuts. Which is why Bush should make all tax rate cuts retroactive, and go for more now, not phased in over several years. A tax cut is what's going to boost the economy and create wealth. And what the heck? The liberals are going to oppose him anyway, whether his tax cut is timid or bold. Historically, tax cuts mean a stronger economy. There's just no downside – except to the spending plans of Washington liberals.
