Before he became a member of the vaunted "Right-Wing Conspiracy," Harry Stein was a full-fledged affiliate of the liberal establishment. But somewhere along the way, real life — and fatherhood — opened his eyes. Stein's book, "How I Accidentally Joined the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy," recounts the tale of his journey from 1970s liberal to 1990s conservative.
Stein's left-wing credentials were spotless. As a journalist in an industry populated by liberals, he carried the leftist banner in his life and work. But things were changing. The Right was beginning to sound right. The Left was beginning to sound — and look — wrong. Stein cuts through the distortions on both sides and shows how liberating it is to no longer have to be a "correct thinker." Speaking to his peers and to his times, Stein tackles provocative topics like affirmative action, PC education and the media. He paints portraits in political courage and cowardice, and delivers unforgettable anecdotes about newsmakers he has known.
Harry Stein has been writing and editing since 1972, when he co-founded The Richmond (Va.) Mercury. He has authored a syndicated newspaper column on kids and family life for United Features, written a weekly feature for TV Guide on the impact of television on American life and authored a regular column for the small business supplement of The Wall Street Journal. Stein has also written columns for American Heritage, The New Republic and The Weekly Standard, among others.
