Focus Point – Misery, du Pont Style

I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis, and as of today, my job will be infinitely harder and my life considerably more disarranged. If I wind up in the wrong city, write the wrong column, give the wrong speech, or just forget what my name is, there'll be a reason.

My assistant for the past 16 years, Eileen Leach, is leaving. It's not nuclear winter, but it's in the ballpark.

Eileen came to work for me just prior to my 1988 campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination. Talk about stepping into the whirlwind. It hasn't slowed down for her since. I hope she's enjoyed it, and knows how much I've appreciated her help. I once proposed naming a new element after her: Eileenium. But now I think I should name a star after her, because stars are always bright and always there, and that's Eileen. She's leaving for what she assumes will be a better job, but I'll bet as good as the job is, she won't find a happier, more grateful boss.

Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas — and Eileen – can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, fixing education.
