Dallas (June 11, 1999) – H. Sterling Burnett, Senior Policy Analyst for the National Center for Policy Analysis, will address the U.S. Conference of Mayors semi-annual meeting in New Orleans on Friday, June 11, to discuss the economic effects of the Kyoto Global Warming Accord on cities.
"The Kyoto accord won't help the environment; it will hurt the economy," Burnett said. "Signing a treaty that hurts the poorest of the poor with no tangible benefit makes no sense at all."
The 1997 Kyoto Global Warming agreement, which has not yet been ratified by any industrialized nation, would require the U.S. by 2012 to cut emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 7 percent below 1990 levels.
