NCPA: Launches Consumer-Directed Health Care Site

New Web Site Focuses on 21st Century Health Care Trends

DALLAS (October 7, 2003) — The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) today launched a new Web site devoted to consumer-directed health insurance plans – http://cdhc.ncpathinktank.org/. NCPA President John C. Goodman, who has been called the "Father of Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs)" by The Wall Street Journal, said the Web site was developed to address the surging popularity of consumer-directed health insurance plans.

"This new NCPA Web site provides resources that employers, employees and health care professionals need to understand consumer-directed plans and how they work," Goodman said. "Consumer-directed health insurance plans will eclipse managed care within just a few years."

  • Two-thirds of the members of the National Association of Business Economists (NABE) said in a recent poll that consumer-directed health insurance is either very important or extremely important in controlling costs, improving access and increasing health care quality.
  • Health Affairs' Market Watch projects that consumer-directed health plans will account for 20 percent of the health insurance market by 2005, and as much as 50 percent within the next four years.
  • BNA reports that consumer-directed health plans will account for at least 24 percent of the health insurance market by 2010.

Several noted health economists and scholars have joined Goodman as expert resources and content contributors for the new Web site, including Public Trustee of Social Security and Medicare Thomas R. Saving and Gerald Musgrave, co-author with Goodman of Patient Power: Solving America's Health Care Crisis.
