DALLAS (March 28, 2000) – What are the real risks in modern life? Why does the media hype unrealistic fears? And why does the public fall for it? These are just some of the questions to be addressed by ABC's John Stossel at the next Sumner's Lecture Series presented by the National Center for Policy Analysis.
Stossel, of 20/20 fame who is rumored to be preparing a daily talk show to replace Oprah Winfrey in the ABC line-up when Winfrey moves to CBS in the fall of 2001, will give a presentation entitled "Pandering to Fear: The Media's Crisis Mentality" at the luncheon, which will take place at noon on Tuesday, April 4, at the Adams Mark Hotel.

Stossel joined the ABC newsmagazine, "20/20," in 1981. He began doing one-hour primetime specials in 1994. The specials, which have consistently rated among the top news programs when broadcast, have earned Stossel uncommon praise: "the most consistently thought-provoking TV reporter of our time" (Dallas Morning News), "has the gift for entertaining while saying something profound" (Orlando Sentinel).
