Gates served as assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser from 1989 to 1991. He spent close to nine years at the National Security Council, serving under four presidents during his tenure. For his service to the country, and the insights shared with six administrations, Gates has received the National Security Medal and President's Citizen Medal. He has received the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal twice and the CIA's highest award, The Distinguished Intelligence Medal three times.
