Washington, D.C. — The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) and Children's Education Opportunity of America (CEO America) will hold a Congressional Briefing to address parental choice in education reform.
Secretary of Education Richard Riley's recent admonition to "dramatically accelerate" student's academic achievement in math and science supports the need for education reform. Figures from the National Center for Education Statistics show children in private schools perform at higher levels in math and science. By allowing parents government-funded rebates if they choose to move their children to private schools, government would give parents a substantive role in helping improve America's global position in the competitive technological market. Parental choice options to be addressed at the briefing include:
- Tax Credits – Both parents and business would receive a "dollar-for-dollar" tax credit up to a maximum of $1,000 per child for private schools.
- Opportunity Scholarships (Vouchers) – Low-income parents would receive a fixed "rebate" from public education funds for private school tuition.
- Charter Schools – Government already fully funds a limited number of existing or new schools exempt from most regulations and free to design their own curricula.
The briefing will include appearances by House Majority Leader and DC voucher proponent Dick Armey, NCPA Policy Chairman Pete du Pont, NCPA President John Goodman, CEO America National Chairman James Mansour, CEO America Vice President of Public Affairs Zack Dawes, NCPA Senior Fellow Linda Morrison and Kevin Teasly with the American Education Reform Foundation (AERF). The NCPA will release "The Tax Credits Program for School Choice" study at a 1 p.m. press conference.
